(Washington, D.C.) – According to a recent survey by Gallup, a plurality of Americans believe that immigration is more beneficial than damaging to the United States. Gallup found that 49 percent of Americans believe immigrants help the nation’s economy by providing low-cost labor, against just 40 percent who say they hurt the economy – a flip from the last time this poll was taken, in 2005. Additionally, 72 percent say immigrants take jobs Americans don’t want, against just 18 percent who hold the contrary view. Furthermore, the poll shows that among U.S. workers who believe immigration has had an impact on their job or company, more say this has been positive rather than negative.

Year after year, the vast majority of newcomers have arrived in America seeking to build better lives for themselves, while contributing to a stronger, more prosperous America. That’s still true today, and these findings from Gallup show the American people recognize it. Policymakers should bear in mind the importance of immigration to our nation as they review public policy.”
