The purpose of education is to help students discover, develop, and apply their unique abilities, establishing a foundation for a life of fulfillment and success. This looks different for each student, making it critical that families have access to educational opportunity.
The reality is that our education system has been struggling to meet the needs of families and students for years, and the unprecedented shift to e-learning has presented challenges to Hispanic and Latino families across Virginia. Now, more than ever, it’s important that we transform our thinking and approach to how students learn by empowering families and students to choose the best education opportunities for them.
There are many options that provide educational freedom for students to learn and develop according to their individual needs and talents. This includes:
- Open enrollment to allow students to apply to any traditional public school outside of their assigned school or region.
- Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) that allow families to withdraw from their assigned schools to pay for tuition or learning expenses at a non-public school.
- Homeschooling for families to direct the learning for their children at home using the curriculum of their choice.
- Charter schools that operate with more flexibility while being held to a high standard of accountability.
- Micro schools which are small in nature, may include multiple grades, and include direction from families themselves.
- K-12 scholarships from certain organizations. Some states have adopted tax credit scholarships that incentivize donations and increase access for families.
When families have the choice to select the best education for their child, everyone wins. Let’s commit to giving Virginia families educational opportunity that allows them to pursue the best option for their children.
