Esto es particularmente cierto en el caso de los estudiantes hispanos, cuya tasa de deserci\u00f3n escolar ha ca\u00eddo dr\u00e1sticamente hasta situarse justo por debajo del 12 por ciento. Sin embargo, esta tendencia oculta una realidad inquietante. A pesar de representar solo el 21,1 por ciento de la poblaci\u00f3n (de 16 a 24 a\u00f1os), los hispanos representan ahora casi la mitad de todos los desertores escolares. Sin embargo, este no ha sido el caso. En 1972, los hispanos representaban el 5,4 por ciento de la poblaci\u00f3n de 16 a 24 a\u00f1os, pero el 12,8 por ciento de la poblaci\u00f3n desertora: una disparidad significativa. Por otro lado, los hispanos representan el 21,1 por ciento de este grupo de edad en 2012, pero el 40,6 por ciento de la poblaci\u00f3n que abandona los estudios. En ambos extremos del periodo considerado, los hispanos est\u00e1n doblemente sobrerrepresentados en la poblaci\u00f3n desertora. En 2013, la alta tasa de deserci\u00f3n escolar de los hispanos se mantuvo en un 11,7 por ciento; peor que cualquier otro grupo en Estados Unidos.     <\/p>\n<p>Ahora m\u00e1s que nunca, el problema de la deserci\u00f3n escolar es un asunto hispano. Por eso, The LIBRE Institute ha puesto en marcha un nuevo programa para ayudar a los adultos hispanos sin diploma de secundaria a obtener la acreditaci\u00f3n que necesitan para triunfar: la Iniciativa del Diploma de Secundaria.
